Chapter Six
Zack picked up chocolate donuts and candy bars at the grocery store, then felt like he should probably grab some ibuprofen too. No telling how many Westons were going to have stress headaches by the time the night was over. He grabbed a few boxes of canned soda, thinking that would be cheaper than getting drinks at the restaurant, then headed over to pick up a bunch of burgers and chicken fillet sandwiches.
He pulled up in front of the hospital and around to the parking lot, then stood next to his car, surveying everything heâd purchased and trying to decide how to get it all inside. Just then, a man came down the aisle of parked cars pushing his wife in a hospital wheelchair. After he got her situated, Zack called out to him, âSir? Are you finished with that chair?â
âYes. I was just going to take it back inside.â
âIâll return it for you.â
The man smiled. âThank you. I really appreciate it.â
Zack felt guilty accepting the thanks when he was really doing it for his own selfish reasons, but he smiled and gave a little wave to the lady sitting inside the car before pushing the chair back over to his trunk.
He layered the cases of soda on the seat of the chair, arranged the sacks of burgers on top of that, then the chocolate, then threw an emergency blanket from his trunk on top of the whole lot and tucked in the corners so hopefully, nothing would fall. Then he pushed the chair toward the hospital, wincing each time he hit a bump or had to go over a grate.
He paused at the security desk and let the guard investigate his cargo. The man shook his head, but gave a little smile as he waved Zack through, and the delivery was made successfully five minutes later.
Kelsi was standing by the door of the waiting room and chuckled when she saw what heâd done. âNow thatâs creative,â she said as she helped him upload the food onto the coffee table.
âI figured it was better than making four trips.â
âI donât blame you. I hate making trips. Iâd rather carry sacks in my teeth than make trips.â
Zack got everything arranged so people could see what was available, then he walked over and gave Bobbi her credit card, along with receipts. âYou did a great job,â she told him. âThank you.â
âIâm just glad I could help,â he replied. âAnd I got a few extra in case anyoneâs extra hungry.â
âGood job. Now, the first thing I need is some of that ibuprofen you brought. Brilliant idea.â
They were about halfway through their meal when the doctor came in, and the room went completely still.
âI have some good news,â he said. âThe baby is doing wellâshe only needed oxygen for about an hour, and then she started pulling in enough on her own. Sheâs taken on a nice pink color, and weâre very pleased with how sheâs doing.â
Wesâs eyes were glued to the doctorâs face. âAnd my wife?â
âHer vitals are stable, and sheâs awake.
